	ark says: Well, at first glance I thought the shop was entirely out of business, but then I spotted the fresh meat in the window -- then again, the meat was packed in two big plastic bags, and it didn't look like they were going to sell it. The shop attracted my attention a long time ago -- before I could read katakana -- because its logo looks like the coat of arms of my home prefecture (which is called a "Canton" in Switzerland: see the top right corner of that page for the coat of arms). When I realized that the shop was named Hormone I had a whole theory about what it meant. I'll explain that theory if you tell me which part of beef is called "hormone" and, especially, why. 	ark says: I learned something today: horumon (ホルモン) looks like a word borrowed from English because it is spelt in katakana on the shop sign, but it may actually be Japanese. Two students of mine informed me that, according to their high school teacher,horumon derives from the dialect word horu ("to throw away") and mon, a dialectal variant of mono (thing). Thus, horumon means "stuff to be thrown away": innards. (The English term "meat", I think, only refers to the muscle flesh of dead animals: the organs are called "innards".) So the butcher's shop sign doesn't read Hormone but Innards. In some countries hormones are used in meat production. More than 80 percent of the beef cattle raised in the United States, for example, are treated with these substances to achieve faster growth and to increase the animals' body mass. In some countries, however, hormones are banned due to concerns over the safety of their use. In 1985, the European Union banned them for all non-therapeutic uses, and in 1988 it imposed a ban on U.S. beef to avoid importing hormone-treated meat. Ever since, there has been a trade dispute between the United States and the European Union. In 1999 the World Trade Organization (WTO) decided the dispute in favour of the Americans, but in the same year the EU's Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures relating to Public Health (SCVPH) released a report showing that the use of growth hormones posed a risk to consumers. Thus, the EU refused to comply with the WTO ruling and didn't lift the ban on US beef, which is still in place today. Because hormones in meat production have a pretty bad name where I'm from, the Hormone reading of the shop sign surprised me quite a bit.It looked like a remnant of an older, naiver age that hadn't yet learned to be critical of "progress" and which considered potentially harmful "scientific" methods of increasing the meat industry's profits not only legitimate but worthy of celebration -- so much so that a butcher's shop would be named Hormone. I'm glad this theory proved to be wrong. Or did it? Anyone within reach of a good etymological dictionary of Japanese, please check and let me know... Posted 30 months ago. ( permalink )
